The concept of “Thunderbolts,” the first “villain movie” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is very similar to that classic movie…? Sebastian Stan, who reprises his role as Bucky Barnes, revealed this to Variety.
This is a unique team-up movie in which anti-heroes who have appeared in past MCU work together and take on a mission under government orders. The plot of the story remains a mystery, but Stan spoke while comparing this film to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975).

The American New Cinema masterpiece “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” is a story about McMurphy, a man who pretends to be mentally ill to escape forced labor in prison, who brings about a change in the patients as he resists freedom in a psychiatric hospital where the patients are strictly controlled. The film stars Jack Nicholson and is directed by Milos Forman.
Perhaps Bucky, the team leader, will take McMurphy’s position in “Thunderbolts*”. According to the cast, the Thunderbolts are “a group of super underachievers.” It seems that Bucky, who has moved on to a new stage after “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” (2021), will bring them together. Stan previously said, “(Bucky) is in a very happy place right now. This is probably the right place for him to be.”
By the way, in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, there was a ruthless head nurse named Ratched who oppressed the patients, but could there be a similar character in Thunderbolts?
